About The Author
An award winning artist, raised in Israel now based in Los Angeles. Sara Shai was involved in creativity from an early age. A teacher at eighteen, she went on to become a writer and freelance journalist, a fashion designer and a painter in oil and acrylic. She has sculpted in clay and carved in alabaster and marble and has a tremendous passion for all of the arts. ![]() She has traveled the world, learning about many different cultures and absorbing the influence of the great masters. In 1971, she moved to Los Angeles and kept writing and corresponding with magazines and newspapers abroad. Her writing offers a fresh look at life with all of its challenges and beauty. This creative expression is apparent in her sculpturing as well. Her themes and images emerge from the inner fabric of her life. Sara began her training with the multi-media artist Manny Kremer, studied figure molding with Harriet Hochberg and carved in stone with the art historian Bernice Schachter. She has participated in many art shows and galleries and is an award winner of the Golden State Sculptor Association and a member of the Malibu Art Association. Her sculpture was displayed in the Sproul Library at UCLA in an exhibit entitled: "Sephardic Art: A Search for Identity" which explored the historical background of Sephardic art of the mainstream today. As a result of the universal search for meaning and identity Sara Shai says in her speech and lectures: "Art is the language of the soul. Its creative force has the power to heal, alter lives and fulfill destinies." Sara's work is poetic and lyrical. Her engagement with the materials is innocent and authentic. She takes hold of a pen with the same passion that she takes hold of a brush or a chisel. Sara brings to life in her book: Beautiful in Black: Conversation with Suicide, sensitivity and insight into the mind of the suicide victim. From her own personal experience she explores the pain and the struggle as well as her triumph in achieving resolution and closure. Her prose is honest and reflective.
